Who is the parent company of PBS? ›

PBS is a private, nonprofit media enterprise owned by its member public television stations.

Stations rely on generous donations from viewers like you, corporate sponsorships, and foundation grants to cover the rest of their operating budget. Part of each station's operating budget is programming dues which it pays to PBS (and NPR) for National programming like PBS News Hour.

PBS provides its member stations with programming in cultural, educational, and scientific areas, in children's fare, and in news and public affairs but does not itself produce programs; the programs are produced by the member stations, independent producers, and other program producers worldwide.

“PBS SoCal and KCET merged in 2018, and since then, we have grown into a strong public media entity serving Southern California that reflects the diversity of our region and provides a full schedule of beloved and trusted PBS programs,” PBS SoCal president and CEO Andrew Russell said in a statement.

Public broadcasting stations are funded by a combination of private donations from listeners and viewers, foundations and corporations. Funding for public television comes in roughly equal parts from government (at all levels) and the private sector.

PBS is a publicly funded nonprofit organization and the most prominent provider of educational programs to public television stations in the United States, distributing shows such as Frontline, Nova, PBS News Hour, Masterpiece, Sesame Street, and This Old House.

NPR receives a small number of competitive grants from CPB and federal agencies like the Department of Education and the Department of Commerce. This funding amounts to less than 1% of revenues.

PBS is a private, nonprofit corporation, founded in 1969, whose members are America's public TV stations -- noncommercial, educational licensees that operate more than 330 PBS member stations and serve all 50 states, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa.

Both rejected bill-killing amendments were supported by a coalition of Southern Democrats and Republicans. President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Act on November 7, 1967. The act was originally to be called the "Public Television Act" and focus exclusively on television, worrying supporters of public radio.

Our distribution rights are fairly limited and are generally confined to dissemination within the United States. While over-the-air broadcasts reach beyond U.S. borders, online video is subject to geo-filtering, which restricts the areas that can view PBS content.

PBS stations reach more children, and more parents of young children, than any of the children's TV networks. PBS and its member stations are America's undisputed home for documentary storytelling. During the 2022-2023 season, PBS offered over 200 hours of new documentary content, seen by more than 50 million people.
