93, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2001. She was a residentof El Paso since 1942 and was a member of Congregation B'Nai Zion. Ida served as past president of B'Nai Brith Women,was a member of B'Nai Zion Sisterhood and was a member of Sun Towers Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by son, MichaelL. Epstein and his wife, Sharna; daughters, Annalie Rollins and Marlene Benz and daughter, Sandra Levinson and herhusband, Sherman; grandchildren, Debra, Lurae, Valerie, Daniel, Jerry, Erica, Kara, Gregory and Laura; 6 greatgrandchildren; brother, Ted Weinstein and sister, Irene Heller. Mariawas a longtime resident of El Paso and was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Cathedral, as well as a member of UnionCatolica De San Jose. She has now been reunited with her husband, Paulino R. Quinones and son, Paulino Quinones, Jr.Maria was a wonderful mother to her sons, Rogelio D. Quinones and Cesario C. Quinones; daughters, Maria Ramona QuinonesOrona and Armida Quinones Vega and a most loving grandmother to her 23 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and 3 greatgreat grandchildren. Poss, Aubrey L. Sr.,
age 83, passed away Friday, November 30, 2001 in San Antonio, TX. Hewas born in Madisonville, TX on March 6, 1918 as the youngest of eight children, having seven older sisters. He wasmarried in Carlsbad, NM on July 2, 1938 and began driving his own truck in the late 40's. After building a successfulcareer in trucking, he retired in 1976, leaving his three sons and a son-in-law in charge of the family business. Thethird-generation business is being run today by four of his grandchildren. After retiring, he spent much of his timetraveling, fishing, and enjoying life with his wife and friends. He and Margaret were longtime members of the BaptistChurch. He was a loving and caring father who could always brighten a room with his wonderful sense of humor and sharpwit. He was loved by many and will be forever remembered. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret BurkePoss; his eight children, Audrey Baker, Barbara Shaw, Joe Poss, Janet Prochnow, Aubrey L. Poss, Jr., Frances Boren,Patsy Ward, and Jerry Poss; his 19 grandchildren; his 28 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. 82, passed away Wednesday November 28, 2001 peacefully at hishome. He was a longtime resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Gamboa was a retired employee after25 years with the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department. He was instrumental in setting up Sleepy City andother Christmas decorations in the town of El Paso. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juana M. Gamboa. 66, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2001. He was aresident of El Paso since 1957 and was a member of the Catholic Church. Paul was a retired Msgt who served proudly inthe U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War before retiring with 26 years of service. Paul was a 3rd and 4thDegree Knight and also a Past Grand Knight with The Knights of Columbus Council 2592 and was a former Master of the 5thDistrict of Texas. He is precededin death by his daughter, Teresa Covey and is survived by his wife of 42 years, AliciaCovey; son, Paul A. Covey; daughter, Anne F. Covey; grandchildren, Tara M. Covey and Tess D. MASON, CAPTAIN JAMES GORDON
USN (Ret), 85, died Tuesday, November 27, 2001. Dr. Mason wasa resident of El Paso for 30 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Emeritus Professor at UTEP, inductee of the ElPaso Athletic Hall of Fame, and recognized world wide as the founder of Sports Admistration. Held an Ed.D. from ColumbiaUniversity. Dr. Mason also served on the Faculties of Baylor University, University of Miami, Ohio University, and UTEP.He was the author of many articles and two textbooks. Dr. Mason led a productive life. He is survived by his loving wifeof 54 years, Frances Z. Mason, daughters Jan Getz and her husband John, Nancy Moredock and her husband Randy, andgranddaughters Anne and Juli. COHEN, BARBARA VAN DUZER
82, passed away November 27, 2001 after a brief illness. An ElPaso resident since 1958, she was born in Ithaca, New York. She was raised in Elmira, New York where she met herhusband, Andy Cohen when he played baseball there. Andy died in 1988, and Cohen Stadium was named for him and his latebrother Syd in 1990. An avid bridge player, Barbara was a member of the El Paso Women's Club and the D.A.R. She issurvived by her son Hank Cohen at Los Angeles, daughters Marina Lee of El Paso and Cathy Souers of Las Vegas,grandchildren Mandy Souers, Andy Lee and Alix Lee, brother Bill Van Duzer, sister-in-law Eva Reznikov and several niecesand nephews, including El Pasoans, Dr. and Mrs. Neal Ross. She had been Director of Religious Education at Fort Bliss and Blssed Sacrament Church as well as a RedCross volunteer, children's art teacher and religious education teacher for both children andadults. passed away Saturday, December 1, 2001 at the age of 71.He was bornJune 25, 1930 to Sallie Davis Waters. He was a graduate of Campbell H.S. in Daytona Beach, FL., and holds a bachelor'sdegree from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL James retired from the military after 20 years of service. Hewas a veteran of Vietnam and Korea. His duty assignments included Syracuse, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; Germany; Ft. Campbell,KY; Ft. Sill, OK and Ft. Hood, TX. His last duty assignment was with the Allied Student Battalion at Ft. Bliss, TX. Heearned a master's degree in Education Administration and Supervision from UTEP. Following his military service he workedfor the El Paso Job Corps as a basic Education Director and as a member of the High Performance Team with the Departmentof Labor. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church, Gideon's International, DAV Post #187, VFW #2451, pastpresident of the PTA, and Scouts of America. Surviving family includes his loving wife of 45 plus years, Genevieve; 3sons, Kenneth L., Anthony J. and William P. and daughter, Natalie Marie, sisters, Margaret and Naomi and a host offamily and friends. retired educator, passed away on Tuesday, December 4,2001 in El Paso. She was born on April 28, 1924 in Amarillo, Texas, the daughter of Ray and Mattie (Potts) Campbell. Shewas a graduate of Canyon High School, Texas Christian University (B.S. in 1944) and the University of Texas at Austin(M.A. in 1958). She was married to Fred Eckman in 1961 and taught at Pan American University in Texas and Bowling GreenState University in Ohio. While at BGSU she established one of the first technical writing programs in the United Statesand later taught effective writing and communications to Federal Government employees across the Southwest. She wasknown as a pedagogue, poet, pilot, political pundit and people lover. A resident of El Paso since 1980, she was precededin death by her parents in 1974 and 1976 and her husband in 1996. She is survived by her sister and brother-in- law,Jane and Olli Buchanan of Oklahoma City, their children and grandchildren, her good friend Frank Hill, numerous cousins,a host of loyal soul mates, and many former students. He was a lifelong resident of ElPaso having worked as a truck driver for Old El Paso Company for 14 years. He had worked for Abbott Transportation andcurrently worked for Bendor Transportation based out of Reno, Nevada. His passion was traveling on our nation's highwaycross country as a truck driver. He had been driving safely for over 25 years and was known as "Jose" on the CB Radio.He loved reading and watching old western, cowboy movies. He was John Wayne's biggest fan and was a cowboy who lovedhorses. Most importantly, he was a proud and devoted father and a very loving husband. His sense of humor made peoplesmile and there wasn't a thing he couldn't do if he set his mind to it. He is survived by his only daughter, OliviaTroye and his wife Marie Troye. Other survivors include his father William Troye and eleven brothers and sisters;Johannas, Ronald, Martin, William F., Julie, Lesta, Lila, Sally, Theresa, Randi, and Linda. 96, passed away on December 12, 2001. He was a long time El Paso residentand with his wife, owned and operated Bond Business School and Bond Business Equipment. He was born in Goldfield,Colorado on June 9, 1905 and grew up in the mining towns in and around Cripple Creek, Colorado. He moved to Californiawhen he was 18 and later worked for the Underwood Corporation and the Boy Scouts of America. Underwood transferred himto El Paso in 1945 as service manager. In 1950 he moved to Albuquerque, NM where he and Mr. Ranville formed Ranville-Bond Company, an Underwood agency. He returned to El Paso ten years later and with his wife founded Bond Business Schooland Bond Business Equipment. He loved working and even after his retirement at age 77 he visited his former customers tobe sure their machines were working properly. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 64 years, Ida Mary, who passed away onApril 24, 1998. She retired from Ft.Bliss in 1993 after more than 30 years of civil service with the U.S. Army. Her parents, Marion F. McDaniel and Helen A.Shaw McDaniel and her brother, James W. McDaniel, preceded her in death. Two daughters and their families, all of ElPaso, survive her: Lynda S. Fields Aponte and her husband, Rudy; grandson David R. GLADDEN, CLARENCE JOSEPH
80, passed away at home on Sunday, December 16, 2001 after alengthy illness. He was born in Savannah, Georgia on November 6, 1921 but moved to Philadelphia, PA where he spent hisearly childhood years. He was preceded in death by his parents and all seven of his siblings. He entered the military in1942 and served with the 332nd fighter group (Tuskeegee Airmen) as a radar mechanic. After the war he obtained a degreein Electrical Engineering, married, and settled in Linden, NJ, where he became active in local politics and civicaffairs including scouting. In 1972, he was asked to transfer to Mexico to establish a twin plant operation. While in ElPaso, his interests turned to the church. He became a member of Grace United Methodist Church and held many positions onthe Conference level. He also became a member of Gideons International. He is survived by his wife of 52 years,Cornelia; three children, Stephen J. Gladden of Chicago, and wife Stephanie, Andrea Grimes of El Paso, and Jill C. Maysand husband Arthur of Missouri City, TX; and six grandchildren, Stephanie and Imani Gladden, Clinton and Mitchell Mays,and Leona and Laura Grimes. Additional family members include nieces, Catherine Gallop of Scotch Plains, NJ, JudyBeasley of Omaha, NB, Joyce Williams of Philadelphia, PA and nephews, Tim Warfield of York, PA and John Warfield ofPhiladelphia. passed away on December 11, 2001 at the age of 58. Colin was aresident of El Paso for more than 25 years. Formerly of Southington, Ohio, Colin served in the Massachusetts and OhioNational Guards for six years during the Vietnam conflict. Earning his nursing degree in 1972 Colin made his career as aregistered nurse serving in many El Paso hospitals and nursing homes. A consummate professional, he will be missed byfamily, friends, and co-workers alike. A lover of classical, folk, and jazz music, Colin taught himself to play guitarand the fiddle. He enjoyed fine literature, philosophy, and fine art. He practiced the art of conversation with greatsuccess and was never at a loss for opinions on any matter. Colin C. Armando married Ruth E. Chavez in 1986 at Mount CarmelChurch. He joined the US Air Force in 1984, and had been stationed in Frankfort, Germany; Shreveport LA; and Las Vegas,NV. He was active in his local church volunteering time and teaching CCD. He also coached youth sports. He thrived infamily activities, enjoying the happiness of others. He spent55 years in El Paso and recently moved to San Antonio. He was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, the East El PasoLions Club, Masonic Lodge 1111, and The Woodworkers Club of El Paso. He also honorably served his nation during WWII inEurope. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters (Nannie, Lucie, Martha, and Virginia). He enjoyedreading, stained-glass, camping, and his woodwork. Most precious to him were his many pets in life that brought him muchjoy. staff sergeant retired U.S. Army, passed away on Monday,December 24, 2001. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1940. Chuck served inthe European and African campaign in WWII. His reserve unit was then activated for Korean conflict. While serving at Ft.Sill, Oklahoma he met and married his wife, Beth Kerfoot in April 5, 1952. He later served with the 25th InfantryDivision Schofield Barracks. After attending Air Defense School at Fort Bliss, TX he served in Europe for 6 years duringthe Cold War. He retired May 1972 with the following medals awarded The Bronze Star with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, ArmyCommendation Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal,Victory WWII, Army of Occupation WWII, National Defense Service Medal, French Fourragere, Sharp Shooter, Auto RifleExpert Rocket Launcher. Chuck graduated with honors from El Paso Community College. Mr. Ladwig then graduated fromprofessional Clown School as Mr. Smiley. He volunteered and entertained thousands of children and adults both locallyand out of state with his magic and balloon sculptures. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, golfer, fisherman,craftsman, gardner and RVer. In addition, he was a loyal Burges Mustang football fan. Finally, Chuck was a wonderfulhusband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. A member of St. Raphaels Parish and a volunteer in the Ft. BlissCatholic Community, he served the church faithfully. Chuck was a member of the Horned Toad Crafters, assistant BoyScouts of America leader, Disabled American Veterans Borderland Chapter 10 and 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army.He was loved and will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Rosary and Mass will be held at St. Raphaels CatholicChurch at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2001. Burial will follow at Ft. Other survivors, include 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.Theresa was well read and versed in the bible and a strong advocate of The Calvary Methodist Church of Nashville, TN,and after marriage to W.J.M. and transfer to New York, she and her husband became members of The Marble CollegiateChurch and was blessed by Norman Vincent Peale, as well as, the daughter Carol who was living with us at the time at Ft.Wadsworth, NY 1960-1963. Theresa was an expert (Master) bridge player, seamstress and needle point advocate and teacher.While living in Nashville, she worked for the IRS and was executive secretary in the preventive medicine department atVanderbilt University for 6 years prior to marriage to W.J.M.
