IN THIS ISSUEWELCOMEFor most South Africans – unless you live in Durban – June is probably one of the worst months of the year. Cape Town resembles a tsunami victim, Joburg turns into an icy brown desert, and… no-one really cares about the rest. With the prospect of any outdoorsy activity off the menu, one might imagine that drinking and consequential (though not always consensual) attempted baby-making tend to spike significantly during this grim month.Except on Saturday the 13th – when all women are locked in cages, and the keys are removed for a full 24 hours. The fragile social order is temporarily restored; allowing the cosmos to realign ever-so-momentarily, and men to be men again. It’s the biggest weekend of the year, because it plays host to the biggest race of the year.…3 min

NEWSMy first McLarenThis car is McLaren spreading the supercar love. The new 570S contains much of what makes the company’s 650S so extraordinary, for three-quarters of the price. In fact, the power, torque and performance figures of the newcomer are within a whisker of matching the original MP4-12C’s. Which means, to put it another way, it goes like a Lamborghini – that’s not just the Huracán but the Aventador. ‘Baby McLaren’, eh?Clearly, the 570S bears the McLaren family look, but it actually has entirely different body panels, made out of different stuff. It’s the first of what McLaren calls its Sports Series – the 650S and 675LT belong to the Super Series, and the P1 and GTR are the Ultimate Series, see. Have you been following the firm’s latest naming scheme? No?…6 min
NEWS5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW JAG XF1 It’s evolved, not, um, revolvedThe first-gen XF, launched in 2007, has been a quiet success story for Jaguar, so the MkII saloon doesn’t mess with the formula. Though a fraction shorter than its predecessor, the XF gains a couple of inches in the wheelbase, while that familial design masks a slipperier shape, its drag coefficient falling from 0.28 to 0.26. It’s rear-drive as standard, though some as-yet-unspecified markets will get 4WD.2 It’s keeping things lightBy employing yet more aluminium in the XF’s construction, Jag has managed to reduce weight further, claiming the new car has lost as much as 180kg, spec for spec. The base diesel XF, we’re told, is 80kg lighter than its nearest competitor, though Jaguar doesn’t specify who it considers competitors (we’re assuming BMW and Merc…2 min
NEWSBRuiZer: it’s the 336kW STI coupeYou wanted a proper, fire-breathing Subaru BRZ STI? You got one. Only there’s one slight problem: it’s a one-off concept. For now.Technically, this STI Performance Concept is a marketing tool to better acquaint the USA with the fabled Subaru tuning brand. But what a tool. The BRZ has been treated to lower, stiffer STI-spec suspension, new 18in alloys, custom Brembo discs and pads, a monster rear wing, a new aero package including front and rear bumpers and side skirts, a flexible strut brace and a whopping great engine.Out goes the standard BRZ’s 2.0 nat-asp effort, and in comes the EJ20 2.0-litre single-scroll turbo boxer from Subaru’s monster GT300 racer. Yep, it’s a fully fledged racing engine.Power is officially quoted at 257kW and 450Nm of torque, but Subaru’s Dominick Infante tells…2 min
